When Atom is restarted, I need to switch tabs before columns selection works

I am on macOS 10.14.

When I start Atom, initially column selection – press alt(option) and click, then drag – does not work, I just end up selecting text. But if I switch tab once, then I go back to the window here I wanted to edit, it starts working.

This is weird and I am not sure how to make columns selection work from the moment the editor is started.

This seems to be issue #111 . Still present with v 1.7.5
