Building a New Syntax Highlighter

So the existing syntax highlighter seems a little outdated and hardly usable specially while using the application to code rust projects so I am thinking of making a new Syntax highlighter for the same.
But I find it difficult to start as there is no docs about what is connected to what
I did find the Theme Maker but again I have no idea which parameter will connect to what
