I would like to add some sort of categorization of the PhD projects that live on GitHub.

e.g.

  • What is the purpose of the repository?
    • Code & data for the research project
    • Thesis
    • High-level description and documentation of progress?
  • File format?
    • .md, .tex, .docx, etc.

What kind of information should we collect and track?

Can you elaborate on what you are trying to accomplish? Do you want to study how people are using source tracking in dissertation research? What markup and formatting technologies? Content? Or are you trying to assemble resources to help who are writing dissertations?

My initial thought was to simply create a list of awesome repos about PhD projects/theses inspired by the many other awesome lists (https://github.com/phillipadsmith/awesome-github, https://github.com/bayandin/awesome-awesomeness, and many many more...)

Basically I wanted to find out how other people have used GitHub and version control as part of their PhDs as I am trying to do the same. So yes, a resource for PhD students looking for some good examples.

But then, having this additional information could actually be quite interesting I think. I'd be interested in seeing how PhD students are using version control and git.
