I think we have established a mental picture of this, but we should get it down in writing.
In terms of technologies I know we were thinking web sockets, but many protocols support web sockets as a transport, along with TCP/IP and Unix sockets, which seems to fit our use case pretty perfectly.
Some possibilities I was thinking about were MQTT, AMQP, and nanomsg, the latter of which looks interesting.
