Is it possible to use this without relying on a selector that is listening to an html event?

The thing that I am clicking resides within a canvas element, so it is not addressable by the typical html id. Instead, I have an ajax call that I want to trigger the slideout with like so:

success: function (response) {
    Slideout({'panel': document.getElementById('panel')});

But I am getting the error Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property '_startOffsetX' of undefined
