Currently in the default colorbar json file we have a max/min range only. This assumes a linear scale. However, for some variables a log scale is more appropriate, or specific levels. Therefore norms need to be defined in the json as we use pcolormesh by default for the spatial plotting.

Two questions:

  1. Can the norms be calculated from the levels?
  2. Do we want to be using contour plots instead of pcolormesh for variables with descrete levels.
    1. Do we always want this?
    2. Do we make it automatic?
