Focus

Why we use Git

  • version control
  • project management

Ideas

  • add learning Git and GitHub to an IDP
  • use GitHub for project management so your supervisor can see what you are working on and where bottlenecks are
    • project boards could be a way for supervisors to get closer to the science without managerial overhead
    • project boards help researchers communicate what they are working on and need help with to everyone on their team including the supervisor
  • create an automated way (i.e., code-based infrastructure) that all organizations / repositories tied to the NWFSC are listed somewhere without people having to update it because our future selves will more than likely forget to update a "spreadsheet" and it will become outdated hourly

Thanks @kellijohnson-NOAA for posting about the team's Seaside chat last Friday. I definitely like to idea of better integrating Github issues and project boards into our project and team management. Is this something you'd like to propose during a future PEP meeting? Perhaps you already have.

For your third bullet, I think it would be really helpful have a NWFSC GH org where all users are members. It wouldn't preclude folks from creating additional teams, but would be nice to be able to see all users under one org, to help better foster collaboration. I think this could be something that David Berklund manages during the onboarding process.

Two exist, but they are private.

Good to know! I hadn't seen these orgs. Any ideas as to who set them up?

No idea, I even suggested to GitHub that they have all organizations display an email even if it was an anonymous one that was GitHub based but got sent to someone in charge of that repo. No response from GitHub as of yet.

Another aside, west coast centers have noaa-acronym and east coast centers just have acronym.
