The /etc/nsswitch.conf is correctly configured by default (i.e. contents identical to here. I cannot find out what needs to be edited so that
getent ahosts `hostname`
does not just return the trivial localhost.localdomain...
localhost.localdomain
If I understand correctly, it should by default give the hostname from /etc/hostname if it is not configured in files (i.e. /etc/hosts).
