"Toggle Bottom Panel" UI is not intuitive

I only care about the output tab when I compile &/ deploy but it takes up half the screen anyway.

An ability to hide or close the Output tab.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Increase the minimum size so I can reduce the amount of screen estate it uses.

An ability to hide or close the Output tab.

The control is at the bottom right corner of the window ("Toggle Bottom Panel"):

But I am seeing feedback from multiple users that this is not very intuitive:

• Output window(and serial monitor) too big at its smallest #532
• As a user, I want to resize the Monitor output view smaller than 10 lines #308
• Tear off serial monitor window (and maybe others) #289 (comment)

  'output' needs to be collapsible

• Add setting for Panel side #1080 (comment)

  The old version was at least able to hide the output panel, the new implementation with no ability to move or hide is a large regression from the original arduino IDE

so I would like to dedicate this issue to considerations of how the UX could be improved in this respect, whether by changing the UI, or documenting the usage, or ...?

I see that VS Code uses a X icon at the top right corner of the panel. That seems far more intuitive to me.
