Seeing how gui-overhaul is a long shot from working anyway, I suggest we immediately switch to QT5 and fix issues along the way. QT5 was released two years ago and is now stable enough, not to mention it may hold the key to simtoi for OSX.

I think the conversion from QT4 to QT5 will be simple enough. I've tagged this with milestone 2.0 which includes all of the other OSX features.

Do we know how well QT5 is supported on older operating systems? Can it be easily backported or shipped with SIMTOI if necessary?

On Gnome-based systems, no issue that I know of. Even CentOS 6 can have QT5.
On KDE-based systems (tested: Kubuntu, Manjaro KDE), QT4 and QT5 can coexist without problem.
