How do you mint currency?

You can mint currency by typing /c mint (amount). There is a power cost associated with minting currency, however, so if you don't have the required power you won't be able to.

Can I make currency out of anything?

You can make currency out of any item, yes.

Isn't there a risk that players will abuse this system?

With the itemCost config option disabled, there are some risks of abuse. I've tried to negate them in various ways, like preventing the placement of currencies and preventing the usage of them in crafting recipes. With the itemCost config option enabled, however, items are required to mint alongside power, meaning that players won't be able to just conjure items up out of nowhere.
