This was discussed in #oragono. SAML is a good fit for some of the other ideas we've discussed:

2FA (support multi-factor authentication #336): instead of building our own 2FA system, support SAML to integrate with external 2FA systems
Enterprise-grade authentication: instead of via a CA system (CA-based system for client certificates #414), use an external system and talk to it via SAML
