Since the new 1.x version of Feathers authentication uses passport under the hood. Any passport auth provider will work. So you can refer to this repo for instructions on how to write your own custom passport strategy.

If you are looking to customize one of our existing plugins this is now described in the authentication section of the docs. An example for local auth is here.
