Notification icons no longer displaying

I've been using Unite for a couple of weeks without any issues, but today when I logged into my session none of the notification icons appeared. I can see the applications that should have notifications icons (Variety, ownCloud, Steam) are running, but the icons are not being shown.

This affects also me on Ubuntu 18.04, not running any other extensions.
PS I reinstalled the OS, whatever the cause was for this behavior, it was caused by the interaction with some packages that were installed at some point. I would guess some KDE packages, but could be anything, was playing around with dock apps

@deckoff On Ubuntu top icons are handled by AppIndicator, so you should report the issue there.
