The solarized color scheme for IntelliJ is very nice to the eyes, but the result is that it doesn't match the rest of the UI. Would it be possible to extend this to a color theme for IntelliJ, to replace Darcula?

To prevent confusion for some readers of this ticket:

  • setting a scheme is in the Preferences under Editor > Colors & Fonts and is limited to the editor
  • setting a theme is in the Preferences under Appearance & Behavior > Appearance and is for the complete UI of IntelliJ or related JetBrains product.

You should install ColorIDE plugin (see https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/7055?pr=phpStorm) to make this work as you say.

Currently (not sure at 100%) the IDEA doesn't allow to style UI elements outside editor area in the theme.

The ColorIDE does apply background/foreground color, but it doesn't change UI font making small default UI fonts look awful for me.

@aik099 is correct in saying that IntelliJ IDEA does not allow custom themes (only Default and Darcula are available).

IDEA-100218 in the Jetbrains issue tracker is a request to add UI theming support - it is still open.
This was also discussed a bit in issue #41.

So unfortunately there is not much we can do at the moment.
