Can you try without pandas to narrow down the cause? Running matplotlib directly works for me (in both ipython and cpython):

Also can you confirm which version of the module you are using? There was a recent commit to address ipython support with pandas but if you installed via pip you likely got an older version without this patch (#16). If so may be worth trying to clone the version from the repo directly to see if this fixes your problem.
