This does not seem to get pushed to the gateway for short lived jobs?

I can get your sample to run, but that's a server that stays running to demonstrate a counter via a web interface.

In the case of a short-lived job, the app finishes before these get published? If I set a breakpoint, it eventually seems to get sent, but is there a way to flush the metrics to the gateway before quitting?

I had the same problem. I tried to set the value of management.metrics.export.prometheus.pushgateway.shutdown-operation to push in the application.properties and it solved the problem for me.
