Is there a way to keep a counter for some metric, and check how much it increases per second on average?

if you have timestamps in your data, you can timeslice(parseDate(field)) 1s | avg(my_other_field) by _timeslice.
timeslice(parseDate(field)) 1s | avg(my_other_field) by _timeslice
If you don't have timeslices, you can do timeslice(now()) 1s instead
timeslice(now()) 1s
