HMMs make stronger assumptions about time -- cannot concatenate differnet data sets together, ebcause HMMs will find that break point as a state change.
HMMs make assumption that dynamics stays at some state, and then switches.
particularly well suited to event-block structure, but this method does not pre-suppose that.
