Is .gitmodules lost somewhere?

This missing files, makes the system not be able to pull down the proper sub git repos, and thus makes the system unusable in its current state.

It's already unusable as it's not done yet ;D

Anyways I added .gitmodules in pull request #203 so feel free to apply that patch your self :)
