I recently moved my website that is being served at the base domain to Github pages, and this broke federation for me. I am trying to serve well-known, and tried initially to manually copy the files, but the .well-known directory on my server hosting matrix appears to be gone. I am also using hugo to generate my site, and the hugo github actions template to build it. If whoever is reading this has any insight into a decent way to host well-known like this, please let me know.
