@Patrick-Kladek suggested a few ideas on a recent call:

Using the gyroscope
Other CoreMotion "sensor fusion" ideas

The advantage of these over compass or GPS-derived course is that they are less susceptible to the urban positioning issues.

This would also be a requisite input for predictive positioning (ex: #23).

He also mentioned maybe CarPlay 2 will be opening up more vehicle sensors.
