Well, well, this is a difference between the two. It seems that the link regex in PHP textile isn't designed to find examples within citations. I've marked this as a feature request for now.
Hi Eliph, just grabbed 5 mins to look at tracking this down and it seems that spans can take horizontal alignment modifiers. So, the < after the opening ?? is being interpreted as "align-left" and this does appear to be a defect after all. I can't think of any inline elements needing horizontal alignment so the fix should be pretty easy.
Looks a bug, it is not possible to place HTML or Textpattern tags within a citation block, like so:
With RedCloth it renders ok.
