II. Updating & Flashing Firmware
Many systems shipping now will come pre-loaded with firmware version 0.104. This is one of the more significant update versions as it adds more fixes to screen tearing. Before running ANY updates, either via basic updates or flashing, be sure to BACK UP anything off your SD card that you aren't willing to lose. Using another, smaller SD card might even be a good idea for just updating. Note that manually flashing does NOT require you to have your SD card inserted while basic updates DO since you are updating directly off the card.
Smaller updates, such as version 0.105, can be upgraded to by downloading the updates from here and placing the TrimuiUpdateV0.105.zip
file onto the root of your SD card.
Navigating in the OS, select Files and you should see your TrimuiUpdateV0.105.zip
file in the first directory. Select this to initiate the update.
Now, if your system is on a version lower than 0.104, it is a good idea to manually flash the update using Phoenix RecoverySuite. This tool is provided on the Trimui update site linked above. Here is a direct link to 0.104.
- Download the recovery zip above and extract it to whatever folder is convenient.
- Inside the folder you will have
PhoenixSuite.zip
,how_to_update.doc
, andtrimui_model_S_dark_V0.104_en.img
. ExtractPhoenixSuite.zip
into it's own folder and enter it. - Turn off your system and remove your SD card. Plug your TrimUi into your computer via a compatible USB-C to USB-A adapter. It should pop-up as a generic USB (or Android) device.
- You MAY need to press both L & R triggers at the same time while booting to boot your device into flash mode.
- Launch the
PhoenixSuite.exe
from inside your PhoenixSuite folder. - Select the "Firmware" tab and click the "Image" button. Navigate to wherever you extracted your files before and select the
trimui_model_S_dark_V0.104_en.img
file - PhoenixSuite should prompt you once more for confirmation before flashing. Select "Yes" to begin the flashing process.
You can confirm that the update has gone through via the Settings applet in the stock UI. It should now say Version 0.104
under Device Info.
Once you've updated to 0.104, you can safely download the .zip
update for 0.105 and update via the console's file browser. It is unknown currently whether or not PowKiddy/Trimui plans on making further updates that will require manual flashing.
If you are having issues getting your device to show up on your PC, you may need to install the Android ADB driver that is included in the PhoenixSuite download from Trimui's website. It should be included under /PhoenixSuite/Drivers/
.
Russ from RetroGameCorps over on YouTube has done a fantastic job showing how to update the firmware on the TrimUI with his video here. Firmware Flashing instructions begin at 2:18
