History of the Galaxy
(This history is based on the unfinished fanfic series 'Rule of the Stars' on the Blind Mind forums, as well as known SR2 canon and current ABEM canon.)
BP - Before Planetfall - time before the Mission of Mercy lands on New Hope.
AP - After Planetfall - time since the Mission of Mercy landed on New Hope.
Year - standard Earth year
Planetfall - Mission of Mercy lands on New Hope around April 06, 31330.
-
The 'Eternal Dream' begins as countless Atroans shed their physical bodies to exist inside a massive supercomputer on their homeworld of Atrozal.
-
Its leaders gone, the galaxy-spanning First Empire begins to descend into chaos. Within less than ten thousand years, there is not a single biological Atroan left in the galaxy.
-
Through war, diplomacy, cultural influence and luck, the Ulthaar Empire establishes itself as a galactic superpower. It takes several millennia for the Empire to stabilize, but by the end of it, it is believed that the Ulthaar may be the next Atroans - and feared that they may follow in the Atroans' footsteps and retreat into seclusion in their home system of Orathi.
-
Atrozal is rediscovered. The Ulthaar choose not to disturb their predecessors, leaving them to their simulations.
-
In a distant galaxy, beings calling themselves 'Overlords' launch an invasion upon one of their neighbouring galaxies. The invasion is successful, and their empire now spans two separate galaxies.
-
The Ulthaar Empire is in its prime.
-
The Overlords, having expanded into several more galaxies, attempt to invade the Atroan home galaxy. A small group of Ulthaar discovers the portal being used by the Overlord invasion force and secretly destroy it. The result is devastating for both sides: the Overlord armada is obliterated by the shockwave and the galaxy they used as a staging area is wiped clean by the subsequent radiation burst within a matter of months, but the Atroan galaxy is similarly rendered uninhabitable.
-
Several outlying Ulthaar colonies, receiving news of the incoming blast of radiation, manage to repurpose most of their fleet and construct additional ships to secure the galaxy in their absence before retreating into large stasis vaults to weather the storm. These forces become known as 'Keepers'; later empires will call them 'Remnants'.
-
The Overlords rebuild and conquer other galaxies. A small quantity of Overlord agents is covertly delivered into the Atroan galaxy through alternative means to prevent resistance during their second invasion.
-
Overlord operatives cause natural disasters which destroy most of the remaining Ulthaar colonies and some of their old strongholds. The Ulthaar 'hubworlds' suffer a particularly stunning attack, their home stars being turned into singularities - but they survive due to shields and gravitational stabilizers as well as the Keeper intelligences.
- Civilization rises on the planet Earth in a far away galaxy.
- Mission of Mercy leaves Sol system. It is the last of several ark ships sent to a planet named 'New Hope' as human life on Earth draws to an end. All of the arks pass through Overlord-created artificial wormholes and are transferred to random points in the Atroan galaxy.
-
The Overlords create new allies and manipulate existing races, preparing to weaken the galaxy through internal strife.
-
The artificial construct known as 'Mono Unit-00' malfunctions and crashes on a remote planet. Attempting to recover information on its origins and purpose, it creates replicas of itself and eventually begins expanding to other worlds.
- The sentient plants known as the Oko are forced to expand from their homeworld of Okus. Their expansion is slow and methodical.
- Colony ship Noble Venture lands on Ruthin III. For unknown reasons, the colonists cybernetically enhance themselves and link up to their ship's computer, eventually becoming what is known as the Hoonan.
-
The Nylli home star mysteriously goes supernova. The avian Nylli realize what is happening in time, and evacuate most of their population aboard huge Motherships.
-
The religiously fanatical Feyh and Saar receive instructions from their gods, and leave their respective homeworlds to evangelize other worlds. The Feyh use advanced technology given by the 'Old Gods' to forcibly subjugate nonbelievers, while the Saar spread a doctrine of peace and understanding. The two seem to be on good terms, however.
-
Hoonan are forced to expand outward due to the growing size of the Mainframe, and discover the hyperdrive. They unwittingly destroy an Oko colony, mistaking them for stubborn but decidedly non-sentient plant life. The Oko retaliate, beginning a war that neither side believes can be ended.
- Mission of Mercy enters Gatt system, crash-landing on Gatt II. Most of the colonists do not survive. The survivors establish a colony.
- Mission of Mercy captain Joseph Calder officially renames Gatt II to 'New Hope'. Later, the ship's AI, Mercy, is deactivated due to erratic behavior.
- In a distant corner of the galaxy, the telepathic Fasshi end their self-imposed exile on their homeworld of Faa and venture out into the galaxy due to overpopulation. Their pacifist tendencies help overcome their neighbours' innate distrust of telepaths, and their peace is undisturbed.
- On February 8, Terran mining vessel S.S. Prospect discovers FTL crystals on an asteroid in the Gatt system. It rushes back to New Hope as quickly as possible.
- Rahta farmer Zut of the Aristhi clan discovers crashed alien vessel near his farm. Initially, his calls for continued peace among the warrior people and defiance of the Clan Council are deemed unacceptable. However, when he explains the situation, the Rahta quickly begin spreading out into space.
-
Terran ship T.P.S. Intrepid tests first hyperdrive on January 2. The test is a complete success.
-
Terran Defense Force is formed.
-
Terran expansion into nearby systems begins.
-
Intrepid's captain Thomas Wildman resigns his commission. This comes as a blow to the fledgling TDF, but its growth continues due to a fear of possible alien attack.
-
First contact between Rahta and Fasshi. The warlike Rahta quickly attempt to conquer the Fasshi - outlying colonies are lost, but a desperate defense and the Fasshi talent for persuasion manages to bring the fighting to a stalemate.
- Late in the year, the recently subjugated Alipha are dispatched into the Atroan galaxy to pave a way for the Vanguard. Instead, the expeditionary force goes rogue - the arrival of the Vanguard is delayed by almost fifteen years, while the Aliphan scientists prepare to weather the incoming storm; the entire civilization dedicates itself to developing advanced technology to detect and close Overlord portals before any substantial forces can arrive.
-
TDF starts losing funding as no aliens are encountered.
-
Wildman agrees to rejoin TDF to strengthen it. Intrepid is refitted, and encounters an Oko ship on its first mission. Mistaken for a Hoonan craft, the ship fends off the Oko's attack and manages to establish a dialogue with the Mother Stalk through the disabled vessel.
-
First contact between Terrans and Hoonan is followed almost immediately by peace between the Hoonan and Oko.
-
Later that year, a Hoonan scout encounters a Feyh crusader. The ensuing first contact scenario is abruptly terminated when the Hoonan refuse to convert to their religion - as is the Hoonan ship itself. A few days later, Intrepid encounters the same warship. Unable to penetrate the vessel's shielding, it barely manages to jump into hyperspace in one piece; the Feyh ship is too slow to pursue.
-
War officially begins between a Terran-Hoonan coalition and the Feyh as the latter launch a crusade into Hoonan space.
-
A malfunctioning Mono drone emerges from an unstable wormhole on New Hope. Analysis of the unit reveals its point of origin and destination; a Terran diplomatic cruiser ferries the Mono to his intended destination. The Mono display some token amount of gratitude, but request that the organics leave them alone.
-
Feyh forces make several successful pushes into Coalition territory. The heavy shielding bestowed upon them by their Shrines allows them to outlast anything the Coalition sends at them, but attrition and increasing resistance gradually slows their advance down to a halt.
-
A Saar Evangelizer cruiser carrying several missionaries arrives at an Oko colony. Their efforts to spread their religion to the Oko and Hoonan fail due to the centralized nature of their societies, but contact with the Terrans results in a small but growing religious community in Terran space.
-
One of the few surviving Ulthaar colonies is awakened by a failsafe mechanism when the stasis pods run out of power.
-
Late in the year, Intrepid encounters a Nylli township. It turns out the Nylli Alliance is also at war with the Feyh, and they reluctantly agree to assist the Coalition for the duration of the conflict.
- Dissection of a crippled Feyh warship allows the Hoonan to develop shielding technology of their own. While inferior to the Shrines, this technology allows the Coalition to start pushing the Feyh out of their space.
-
The Feyh are forced to abandon their crusade into Coalition space.
-
The Nylli Alliance formally joins the Joint Defense Coalition.
- Border skirmishes start between the Feyh Communion and Mono Collective, with inconclusive results.
-
Mono Collective develops shielding technology. Skirmishing continues, but neither side seems interested in all-out war yet.
-
Rahta forces begin making significant progress towards Faa.
- First contact between JDC scouts and Fasshi Republic. The Fasshi promptly request aid against the Rahta and membership in the JDC. The latter request is denied out of concern over their telepathic capabilities.
-
JDC forces finish forcing Rahta troops from Fasshi space.
-
The Bluuhbi, first of the Vanguard, are sent by the Overlords through small, temporary wormholes, to create and stabilize a larger rift for the main invasion fleet to arrive. Instead of the typical subjugation parties sent to rapidly establish a beachhead, the Bluuhbi bring a trio of Harvesters with a modest escort fleet. The third Harvester is specially modified for ringworld assembly and colonization; it takes a mere two years to break down the planets in their star system and assemble the ringworld, dismantling the colony ship in the process.
-
Alipha scouts locate a Bluuhbi ringworld under construction. Their initial attacks are unsuccessful, but force the Bluuhbi onto the defensive.
-
First contact between Ulthaar Dominion and Fasshi Republic. The Ulthaar leadership commits a limited expeditionary force to help repel the Rahta.
-
Feyh Communion launches a second crusade against the JDC and its allies, forcing a stalemate on the Rahta front.
-
As the Oko Unity and Mono Collective enter the Second Great War, both Rahta and Feyh governments are forced to admit defeat and withdraw to their own space. The JDC is too worn out from the conflict, and its enemies too heavily fortified, to press into enemy territory. Consequently, the Rahta and Feyh are able to start rebuilding.
-
The C'k'tnilit enter the Atroan galaxy, fleeing from an unknown enemy. The few pieces of information that filter through to the supercomputer on Atrozal convince it that Atrozal is at risk, prompting it to pull the Atroans from their simulations and begin preparing to defend the galaxy against this new threat.
-
First contact between Alipha Foundation and JDC.
-
First contact between JDC and Bluuhbi Coalition.
-
Alipha Foundation enlists the aid of the Ulthaar Dominion.
-
More of the Vanguard arrive in a similar fashion as the Bluuhbi.
-
A reluctant JDC enters the Bluuhbi War.
-
The Khalerii finish securing their beachhead and turn their attention outward.
-
Khalerii forces make significant inroads against the Bluuhbi, stalling their portal stabilization project.
-
Atroan Network begins constructing defense stations on the outskirts of the galaxy. Their purpose remains unclear, but most Atroan commanders show neither patience nor mercy in securing the resources they require. Several outlying JDC outposts are destroyed in the ensuing conflict.
-
C'k'tnilit forces find themselves at odds with the rest of the galaxy as they seize resources for their exodus by any means necessary - be they diplomatic or military.
-
Nejjul'har Assembly launches a surprise attack against both Vanguard empires and the Alipha. Fearing a third Feyh crusade, JDC forces refuse to push any further away from their home territory, leaving only a token force to assist the Alipha.
-
Atroan defense stations come under attack from unidentified alien ships. The means of their arrival in the galaxy remains unclear, but they show a singleminded determination to destroy the Atroan stations at any cost. Consequently, the Atroan Network redoubles its efforts to defend their stations, starting to ignore the other races and their petty conflicts.
-
C'k'tnilit exodus is halted by the loss of several Beacons. Unable to advance to the next galaxy, they grow increasingly desperate to rebuild their lost equipment in time to flee. Upon learning of the attacks on the Atroan stations, they dispatch whatever forces they can spare to provide assistance.
-
Bluuhbi Coalition suffers several crippling defeats. They are forced to reorient from summoning the Overlords to simply surviving the enemy onslaught.
-
Khalerii Union abandons its own portal-stabilizing efforts in favor of crushing Bluuhbi and Nejjul'har resistance.
