Growthcraft Milk Cheese Production
Growthcraft 2.6.2
In order to get started with making cheese using the Growthcraft Milk module, you will need a Cheese Vat, some starter culture, and some rennet. With these three basic components you will be off to a good start in making some good, well aged, cheeses that you can share with others.
Before making any kind of cheese you are going to need to make a Pancheon, Culture Jar, and a Cheese Vat.
The Pancheon is used to seperate the cream from milk to produce Skim Milk. This is done by right clicking a bucket of milk on the Pancheon. After the Pancheon processes the Milk, you will have two bottles of Skim Milk and one bottle of Cream. You will need the skim milk for making cheese, save the Cream for making butter.
Next we need to make Starter Culture. This is done by taking the Skim Milk from our Pancheon and placing it into a Culture Jar. In order to process the Skim Milk we have to place a heat source under the jar (Netherrack, Nitor).
Another key ingredient to making cheese is Rennet. Rennet is a complex of enzymes produced in the stomachs of ruminant animals. Rennet is what actually curdles the casien in the Milk to make chesse. Rennet is made using the Brew Kettle by combining water with a Stomach. Stomach is found by killing calves. One stomach will make a bucket of Rennet.
The Cheese Vat is used to make the curd required for making your cheese. To make the cheese vat place a Brew Kettle into a crafting table.
To start making cheese you will need to make Milk Curds. This is done by adding five buckets of Milk, one bottle of Rennet, and one Starter Culture. Using a sword, right click the Cheese Vat to cut the curds and start the process of making the mixture into Milk Curds. As soon as the fluid turns green, you can extract the Whey with a bucket, which is a waste product. You will now have Milk Curds in the Cheese Vat. Next you will need to add Salt, and the corresponding ingredient to make the style of cheese that you want. It is important to not click to fast as there are three inventory slots and if you double click or your click is not registered, the vat will not work correctly.
Salt is produced by taking saltwater from oceanic biomes by using a bucket or bottle, and placing it in a furnace. This will produce a bucket or bottle of salt. Salt can then be taken out of the bucket or bottle. Salt Water is disabled by default in the Growthcraft Core config file. You can use salts from other mods.
After the cheese vat is done mixing your cheese, you will need to use a cheese cloth to extract the cheese by right clicking the Vat with your cloth in hand. Then you will need to hang the resulting curds by attaching it to the underside of block. You will immediately see the moisture draining from it. It doesn't take long for it to change colors. After the curds have dried and changed colors remove it by right clicking it and place it into the Cheese Press.
The Cheese Press is used to press out the remaining moisture from your cheese. After you place your cheese in the press you will need to use a Sword to activate it or use a lever. After the press has completed, you will have an unwaxed version of your cheese.
Beeswax is used to seal Cheddar and Monterey cheese. Beeswax comes from Growthcraft Bees and is made from nine empty honey combs in a crafting table. It can be dyed with red or black. You apply the wax by placing the cheese down and then right clicking it with the wax. Do not try and move it while it is still aging.
In order for your cheese to be edible, you must age it. You age cheese by placing down. After a couple of minutes you will have an aged version of your cheese. After your cheese has aged, you can slice it by right clicking it to produce 64 edible slices of cheese.
