The icicle is a dangerous frozen block that grows in cold biomes when it snows. They are similar to Pointed Dripstone, but with a few extra mechanics for freezing.

Obtaining

Icicles will grow in overhangs near the surface during weather. They require a sufficient sun light level, to grow, and will only appear up to a few blocks below the surface on full-faced blocks. They will drop themselves in item form when mined with a silk touch pickaxe.

Icicles drop from Biters.

Icicles can be found in the Frostologer's Castle.

Behaviour

Growth and Instability

Icicles will grow by themselves over time. However, they grow much faster during rain/snow and thunder storms.

Hanging Icicles will randomly become unstable, causing them to emit some snow particles and then eventually break and fall. Falling Icicles pose a hazard to anyone unfortunate enough to be underneath an icicle when it falls.

If the root block of a hanging icicle is placed on any ice-type block, it will not become unstable and can grow more icicles infinitely, making it suitable for farming.

Usage

Throwing

Icicles can be thrown, applying damage and frost to the first entity it hits. Throwing icicles has a small cooldown is 0.5 seconds.

Crafting

Icicles can be used to craft Glacial Arrows, which when fired from a Bow, Crossbow, or Dispenser, will chill their target.

The Icicle block itself is otherwise very similar to Pointed Dripstone. However, they are much weaker and can be broken by any projectile thrown at them. This makes clearing them with snowballs fairly easy to do. One notable difference is that they are also much more unstable than Pointed Dripstone.

Crafting icicles in a 2x2 pattern will yield 1 Brittle Ice block.
