How are portfolio items sorted?

It seems like portfolio items are sorted alphabetically by title, whereas publications are by date. But i could be wrong
Is there a way to sort the portfolio items by another field that is user defined?

I'd like to highlight some projects higher up the page than others

Information on sorting is included in the Wiki - Customizing the content on your site. Pinning items in the list isn't supported at this time.

Thanks. I have read that several times, which is why i asked it here. The wiki mentions sorting in chronological order. However i dont see that, (i see alphabetical) or i dont understand where "time" is being taken from since it isn't a field in the portfolio header

Yes, I had to go back and edit the Wiki a couple minutes ago - since everything is built upon Jekyll it follows the filename for sorting and usually expects that files are named YYYY-MM-DD-title.md - on the upside that does mean that you can control order of portfolio items a bit by adjusting the filenames as needed.
