Installing Amber

WordPress Plugin Directory

Amber is available on the WordPress plugin directory. Search for "Amber" from your admin panel (Plugins > Add New) to install Amber with one click. This is the recommended method to get started with Amber.

Manually

We strongly recommend installing Amber directly from the WordPress plugin directory. The code in this Github repo, while up-to-date with the code hosted by WordPress, is not packaged for immediate upload into WordPress. Installing Amber via the WordPress plugin directory also allows you to upgrade to the most recent releases simply and swiftly.

However, if you'd like to DIY it for one reason or another, the most recent stable release of Amber is be accessible as this file: https://github.com/berkmancenter/amber_wordpress/archive/master.zip

To manually install Amber from Github, download the source code of the most recent stable release. Unzip (or otherwise decompress) the file named amber_wordpress-master.zip. Inside the directory amber_wordpress-master there is another directory named amber. Re-compress the file named amber. The source code should now be named amber.zip.

Within the WordPress admin panel, navigate to Plugins -> Add New in the Administrator dashboard and click the "Add New" button. Follow the link to the page where you can upload a plugin in .zip format. Browse to the amber.zip file that you renamed and re-archived. Click "Install Now." (Note: If you attempt to upload the file amber_wordpress-master.zip directly into WordPress, the installation will fail.)

Bavigate back to the "Plugins" page, scroll down to "Amber," and select the "Activate" link next to the module name to make sure that Amber is enabled. The "Tools -> Amber Dashboard" and "Settings -> Amber Settings" options should now be available, and the module will be running in the background.

Disabling Amber

To disable Amber's functionality temporarily, you can visit Plugins and click the "Deactivate" link next to the name of the Amber plugin. This will prevent Amber from checking and taking a snapshot of any new links, but will not delete any of the associated files with Amber.

Uninstalling Amber

To disable Amber's functionality fully, you can visit Plugins, mark the checkbox next to the Amber plugin, select "Delete" from the "Bulk Actions" menu, and click "Apply Changes". This will delete the plugin and all of the associated files with Amber (including all previously snapshotted sites).
