Installing Amber

WordPress Plugin Directory

We're planning to make Amber available via the official WordPress plugin directory within the next few months. For now, though manually is your best bet.

Manually

The most recent stable release of Amber is be accessible as this file: https://github.com/berkmancenter/amber_wordpress/archive/master.zip

To install Amber, download the source code of the most recent stable release. Unzip (or otherwise decompress) the file. Inside the file "amber_wordpress-master" there is another file named "amber." Re-compress the file named "amber". The source code should now be "amber.zip".

Within the WordPress CMS interface, navigate to Plugins -> Add New in the Administrator dashboard and click the "Add New" button. Follow the link to the page where you can upload a plugin in .zip format. Browse to the "amber.zip" file that you renamed and re-archived. Click "Install Now."

Then, navigate back to the "Plugins" page, scroll down to "Amber," and select the "Activate" link next to the module name to make sure that Amber is enabled. The "Tools -> Amber Dashboard" and "Settings -> Amber Settings" options should now be available, and the module will be running in the background.

Already have Amber installed?

Because Amber is not yet in the WordPress Plugin Directory, you can only upgrade to the most recent release directly via the WordPress file system:

  1. Deactivate the Amber plugin using the WordPress control panel (Plugins > Installed Plugins).
  2. Download the most recent release from https://github.com/berkmancenter/amber_wordpress/archive/master.zip. Unzip (or otherwise decompress) the file.
  3. Copy the new files into the wp-content/plugins/amber directory, overwriting the existing files.
  4. Activate the plugin using the WordPress control panel (Plugins > Installed Plugins).
Updating the Amber plugin in this manner will retain all stored content and user preferences.

Disabling Amber

To disable Amber's functionality temporarily, you can visit Plugins and click the "Deactivate" link next to the name of the Amber plugin. This will prevent Amber from checking and taking a snapshot of any new links, but will not delete any of the associated files with Amber.

Uninstalling Amber

To disable Amber's functionality fully, you can visit Plugins, mark the checkbox next to the Amber plugin, select "Delete" from the "Bulk Actions" menu, and click "Apply Changes". This will delete the plugin and all of the associated files with Amber (including all previously snapshotted sites).
