oblique strategies [fifth edition]

 do something boring
it is quite possible (after all)
ask people to work against their better judgment
 be dirty
 cut a vital connection
balance the consistency principle with the inconsistency principle

 get your neck massaged
always give yourself credit for having more than personality
 put in earplugs
 remember those quiet evenings
assemble some of the elements in a group and treat the group
 ask your body
 abandon normal instruments
 is there something missing
 change instrument roles
 is the information correct

what mistakes did you make last time
do nothing for as long as possible
 discard an axiom
destroy - nothing - the most important thing
 go outside. shut the door
 humanize something free of error
 do the words need changing
you can only make one dot at a time
 don't break the silence
 breathe more deeply
 use an old idea
look at the order in which you do things
 (organic) machinery
a very small object - its centre
 idiot glee (?)
consult other sources - promising - unpromising
go slowly all the way round the outside
repetition is a form of change
 ghost echoes
short circuit (example: a man eating peas with the idea that they will improve his virility shovels them straight into his lap)
remove ambiguities and convert to specifics
 use an unacceptable color
give way to your worst impulse
 cascades
make an exhaustive list of everything you might do and do the last thing on the list
 give the name away
 emphasize the flaws
 overtly resist change
 do the washing up
 accept advice
 reverse
 twist the spine
 children - speaking - singing
 are there sections? consider transitions
 decorate, decorate
 be extravagant
 a line has two sides
remove specifics and convert to ambiguities
 towards the insignificant
 disconnect from desire
 what wouldn't you do
take away the elements in order of apparent non-importance
intentions - nobility of - humility of - credibility of
faced with a choice, do both
make a sudden, destructive unpredictable action; incorporate
imagine the piece as a set of disconnected events
 emphasize differences
 reevaluation (a warm feeling)
 use filters
 cluster analysis
 question the heroic approach
 lost in useless territory
 always first steps
 listen to the quiet voice
 infinitesimal gradations
 courage
honor thy error as a hidden intention
 lowest common denominator
left channel, right channel, centre channel
discover the recipes you are using and abandon them
 disciplined self-indulgence
 just carry on
 into the impossible
 simple subtraction
 bridges - build - burn
 consider different fading systems
 turn it upside down
look closely at the most embarrassing details and amplify them
change nothing and continue with immaculate consistency
 do we need holes
how would you have done it
 water
feed the recording back out of the medium
 fill every beat with something
 the inconsistency principle
 take a break
the tape is now the music
 tidy up
 use fewer notes
only one element of each kind
 don't be frightened of cliches
you don't have to be ashamed of using your own ideas
 mechanicalize something idiosyncratic
don't be frightened to display your talents
the most important thing is the thing most easily forgotten
make a blank valuable by putting it in an exquisite frame
 work at a different speed
allow an easement (an easement is the abandonment of a stricture)
convert a melodic element into a rhythmic element
 you are an engineer
 mute and continue
state the problem in words as clearly as possible
 emphasize repetitions
 simply a matter of work
 spectrum analysis
 tape your mouth
 think of the radio
trust in the you of now
 use 'unqualified' people
