Dwm is an extremely fast, small, and dynamic window manager for X. Dwm is created by [suckless.org](https://suckless.org). This is my personal build of dwm.

My version of DWM is patched so you can use an alternative bar instead of using dwm default one.

The patches I added

  • attachaside —> Make new clients get attached and focused in the stacking area instead of always becoming the new master
  • cyclelayouts —> Cycles through all avaiable layouts
  • restartsig —> dwm can now be restarted
  • movestack —> This plugin allows you to move clients around in the stack and swap them with the master.
  • uselessgap —> adds “useless gaps” around windows
  • moveresize —> This changes allows you to move and resize dwm’s clients using keyboard bindings.
  • anybar —> dwm-anybar is a patch for dwm that enables dwm to manage external status bars such as lemonbar and polybar. dwm treats the external bar as it would its own, so all regular dwm commands such as togglebar affect the external bar in the same way.
  • IPC —> dwm-ipc is a patch for dwm that implements inter-process communication through a UNIX socket. This allows you to query the window manager for information, listen for events such as tag changes or layout changes, as well as send commands to control the window manager from other programs/scripts.

Layouts

  • Stacked
  • Floating
  • Monocle –> Fullscreen
  • Grid
  • Centered Master
  • Centered with Floating master

Dependencies

  • alacritty —> A fast, cross-platform, OpenGL terminal emulator
  • yajl —> a tiny C JSON library. Required due to IPC module.

Installing

Running dwm

If you do not use a login manager (such as lightdm) then you can add the following line to your .xinitrc to start dwm using startx:

exec dwm

If you use a login manager (like lightdm), make sure that you have a file called dwm.desktop in your usr/share/xsessions directory. It should look something like this:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Dwm
Comment=Dynamic window manager
Exec=dwm
Icon=dwm
Type=XSession
