Existing usage is correct -- see eg http://graphql.org/learn/queries/#variables

The existing use is correct because the only thing you can do on non-connection types is filter so we don't have a keyword. On connections (e.g. allMarkdownRemark) you can filter, sort, skip, limit. With a non-connection type like markdownRemark, the only thing you can do is select the node you want which is an implicit filter.
