In the examples "Hide Search on Single Select" does hide the search input, but typing still works for filtering.. I guess the input should also be disabled when it's hidden.

Excellent, this prevents the keyboard from popping up when on a mobile device (Android at least) when the search field isn't visible.

Even with search disabled, one should be able to filter the dropdown by typing. This "works" for a standard select element - I can type into a select and the first matching option will be selected - and it worked in Chosen v0.9.12.

I want to have the flexibility to be able to display the search input or not, but be able to filter the list regardless - again, this worked in Chosen 0.9.12
