Rip out ancient code paths to make the code more intelligible, and bid a fond farewell to Snow Leopard and Lion. Also use properties in a couple more places. No change in behavior is intended.

Looks like good work to me. So I have checked out this pull request and briefly tested in macOS 10.11 Beta in my non-ARC project: creating a new document, opening an old document, Save As, Revert to > Previous Save, Revert to > Versions Browser. No trouble found. I shall continue using in my development builds and have set a reminder to merge in 7 days if no trouble appears. |

This removes about 100 lines of code (net). No change in application behavior is intended.
