Introduction

Hello there! If you are reading this then congratulations! You have officially taken interest in one of the most coolest features of bab be u: LEVEL MAKING! With this tutorial, you should be able to pick up bab be u's editor quickly, so that you can get right to making whatever your bab heart desires.

How to get to the editor

  1. Open the game and select "editor".

  2. Select "NEW LEVEL" or "NEW WORLD" (if you want to make a group of levels) then select "NEW LEVEL" after that.

And there you go! You're in the editor!

A tour of the editor

When you start working on a new level your game should look like this:

ahem just...give it a moment

Here's what all of the symbols in the top left corner mean:

What the buttons do

From left to right:

Folder with up arrow

Goes back to the level list. Don't forget to save before doing so!

Floppy disk

Saves the level in it's current state.

Keep in mind that the editor does not autosave yet.

Cog

Edits the level's metadata. Here's what each component means:

  • Name - The level's name.
  • Author - Who made the level.
  • Palette - What set of colours the level uses.
  • Music - What song plays in the background of the level.
  • Width and Height - How wide and tall the level is.
  • Extra - I'm...not to sure what extra does...

P Flag

Switches the game into play mode (but does not save the level). You can also go into play mode by pressing F1 and F2 to go back into editor mode (or click the cog).

Camera

Allows you to click and drag to take screenshots.

Paint bucket

Lets you set the color for the object in the brush. Shift+clicking on the bucket gives you choices from the entire palette.

Placing and removing objects and texts

To place objects, you need to press Tab to bring up the object sheet. There, you can left click on the object you wish to place. After selecting an object, press Tab again to close the object sheet. You then simply click where you want the object to go or click and drag to place multiple. To remove objects, you need to right click a vacant tile then left click the object you want to remove. Right clicking works like a colour picker but for objects.

If you want to learn about the different words and objects, check out the rest of the wiki.

Sharing your level(s)

To find where your levels are stored, press Ctrl+Shift+F. Doing that will bring up the file explorer open to where your level is located. As you may see, levels are stored as .bab files, making it extremely easy to share with others.

All you really need to do now is copy and paste the file to wherever you can share your level!

Shortcuts

bab be u's editor has a lot of shortcuts to streamline the creation process. Here is a comprehensive list of them: Editor

  • Ctrl+S - Saves the level.
  • Ctrl+O - Opens up the level settings.
  • Ctrl+L - Brings up the level selection menu (make sure you save beforehand, as you can't return to editor from this)
  • Arrow keys - Rotates the direction of the object in the brush, and all placed objects under it.
  • Right Click - Copies the object under the brush. If there are multiple objects, then right clicking multiple times will cycle through them.
  • Shift+Left Click - Allows you to stack different objects on each other.
  • Ctrl+Left Click - Allows you to stack multiple of the same object.
  • Shift+Right Click - Lets you edit an object's special data. For most objects, this lets you set what level is in the object, but for lines, it lets you change when the line is unlocked.
  • Shift+WASD - Translates the level in the direction you press.
  • Ctrl+T - Opens up an anagram finder: this shows all possible things you can spell with the letters you've placed in the level.

Selection tab

  • Typing: allows you to search for objects, darkening objects that don't match.
  • While searching...
    • Enter: If your search has an exact match (eg. if you've typed "bab" or "nogo") then pressing enter will select that object and return to editor.
    • Shift+Enter: If your search has an exact match for an object, then shift+enter will select that object's text. Enter and shift+enter do the same thing if you're searching for text (eg. "nogo").
    • Ctrl+Enter: If your search is less than 7 characters long, then pressing ctrl+enter will create a custom letter using what you've typed.
  • Ctrl+Number - Switches to the tab that is that amount of spaces from the left.
  • Other shortcuts are listed in-game.

Aaaaand that's about it! Have fun!
