Arch Planning

Arch planning is a way to generate an entire arch form from a curve. It is also a nice way to get a lot of teeth into a scene quickly.

Restoration Planning

Make sure you have some tooth restorations planned. In this case, I have 12 units planned on the bottom.

Adding a Curve

The arch planning utilities are in the Bridge Panel. It may move in the future, but for now that is where it is. Once the operator starts, you can left click on any objects in the scene to drawn an arch. It should extend from 2nd molar to 2nd molar as this is how the arch length is calculated. Hit Enter when done.

You can then edit the curve in edit mode. A nice trick to flatten is to select all points, and scale to 0 along the Z axis.

Placing Teeth on the Curve

With the curve selected, press the place teeth on curve operator.

  1. The "Max", "Mand" options tells the addon which arch to import

  2. The 2nd options tells whether to align the central fossa or cusp tips with the arch. This makes setting up occlusion slightly more efficient, although articulating sets of teeth are not available at this time.

  3. The "limit" option (blue box) will only place teeth which there are corresponding restorations planned in the tooth panel. Notice the 2nd molar is absent, even though it's length was considered in the distribution along the curve.

  4. The teeth may come in upside down depending on the direction the curve was drawn. Simply check the reverse box to correct that. This can be done in the undo/redo panel in the lower left (pink box). This image has the popup shown and the undo/redo panel shown even though the undo/redo options will not be visible until after the operator is run.

Manupulating the Curve

At this point, the teeth are locked into the curve. The whole arch can be moved by moving the curve object. The teeth will follow along the curve if you bend it. Here I have made a completely unnatural curve of Spee. The sizes of the teeth however will not change if the arch length is significantly altered.

Confirming the Arch Plan

Once the overall placement is correct, hit "Keep Arch Plan." This unlocks the teeth from the curve. Their positions and rotations can now be manipulated individually for fine tuning.
