Overall Questions

To do: ask Sameer and Linda to provide specifics about the demands for these data

  1. What causes water to move? How does water move?
  2. How hard is it to quantify/measure/predict water evaporation? Is it as simple as computing the missing water?
  3. What "political barriers" are there in climate justice work?
  4. Can population data be incorporated into climate models? If so, how?
  5. Are there other major basins/areas that allocate water/resources on such a large scale (besides the CBR)?
  6. How important is it to understand the finer details of the relationship between gravity and water (i.e. how GRACE works)?
  7. (Probably a silly question) how challenging is filtering water/using ocean water to mediate water scarcity/insecurity?
  8. What role does soil moisture play in GRACE's measurements? Is "greenwater" picked up by GRACE?
  9. "Of the world’s 37 largest aquifer systems, 13 were found to be suffering critical depletion" -- what are these 37? And 13?
  10. What is the role of carbon in the hydrological cycle/climate change/etc.?
  11. Need to educate myself more on Earth's energy/energy imbalance -- how is this measured? What does it mean?
  12. Were there any extreme flooding events in the CRB during the time when GRACE data was recorded?
  13. What's the spatial and temporal resolution of GRACE and GRACE-FO? How long have they been in service?
  14. Does USGS WatStore system, the Illinois State Water Survey, and published reports have data from wells from CRB? (Regional groundwater fluctuations)
  15. How should we think about quantifying uncertainty with GRACE data?
  16. To what degree can uncertainty from GRACE be quantified? Does it vary by region, time period, etc.?
  17. Do we need to apply statistical techniques for esimation/smoothing? Which should we use?
  18. What datasets do we need to combine with GRACE for our purposes?
  • Projected models
  • Weather data, ie, grid weather data, linking groundwater movement to climate, then adding in projections from weather, population, etc.--what scenarios are we most concerned about?
  • Projected models
  • gridded data will required smoothing
  • various interpolation schemes

Questions for first Stakeholder Meeting (with Aaron Citron)

  • How much work has been done on assimilating multiple types of data (to include GRACE)? In which areas is the field is lacking?
  • How do legal decision-makers integrate GRACE data in decision-making?
  • How can a dataset with more information about groundwater be useful for policy and legal decisions?
  • Given that ~80% of usage comes from agriculture, are policy interventions trying to incentivize less water use there? What are the politics around this? How can a dataset about groundwater be useful for water use policy in agriculture?
  • Do we have information regarding the optimal water usage among states in the Colorado River Basin (CRB) to promote water conservation?
  • What distinctions should we consider between the Upper and Lower Basin?
