Trying #1788 again, but addressing #1788 (comment) by not changing the node requirement

In case you do decide to drop support for older nodes, node-gyp supports the following:

@branchvincent, thank you for your persistence in fixing this issue. It emerged as a blocker for our Node-based plugin on an embedded system after the underlying system was upgraded, preventing new users from installing. To mitigate the problem, we published sqlite3-gyp based on your code as a temporary workaround. I do hope this gets merged into the main branch soon so we can remove that workaround. Thank you again—this PR made a significant difference for us.
