TL;DR

Your shadows don't appear when far away.
Put a ProxyShadowCaster on the Renderers you want to have far shadows, or a ProxyShadowCasterGroup on a parent GameObject.
Your shadows now appear when far away.

Details and thorough usage

Proxy shadows are a kind of shadow that is visible from much farther away then normal shadows, in exchange for being lower resolution.

They are usually put on low quality renderers (those that are part of a SectorProxy or the like) for performance, but they can apply to any renderer.
