Welcome to the Tutorial in practical SLAM for the PhenoRob Summer School 2021

In this session, you will use a simulation environment of a vineyard and experiment with various SLAM methods using different sensors to build robotic maps allowing robots to navigate in agricultural settings. The focus is very much on practical experience, building upon the theoretical foundations of Workshop 3. The learning objectives mainly are:

  • First hand experience of state of the art SLAM methods
  • Practical use simulation of a robot in the field
  • Awareness of the challenges of dynamic (growing) environments and outdoor terrains
  • Different sensors utilised for map building in outdoor environments
  • Appraise different map representations for memory and computational footprint and suitability

To be ready for the workshop, participants are strongly encouraged to already prepare their computers as described in Setting up. This involved installing Docker on your computer and "pulling" the prepared image. Should you not be able to run this image in docker, please reach out on the "workshop-5" channel on Discord to receive log in credential to one of our remote instances (see Remote Access).
