Y Gantry Bogie for 20x40mm Extrusions

The X40F605BOGIE works much like a railway bogie, which is the flanged-wheeled chassis on which railway cars ride. Instead of a railway car, we have a vertical 20x40mm extrusion for mounting arbitrary payloads. Instead of railway wheels, we use flanged 5x14x5 F605 bearings. Instead of a railway, we simply use a length of horizontal 20x40mm extrusion pinched between a pair of X40F605BOGIEs.

The use of flanged bearings is critical for precise motion with low friction. However, note that the bottom bogie is designed to touch and slide along the extrusion--apply grease here to minimize sliding friction.

Function

Features and functional considerations:

  • PLA printable
  • two X40F605BOGIEs are required to pinch horizontal extrusion securely. Fix the top bogie first as desired and then slide the bottom bogie up to lock the gantry in place.
  • flanged ball bearings lock joint into place precisely with minimum friction.
  • grease lower contact point to minimize sliding friction between bottom bogie and extrusion.
  • M5 locknut should not be overtightened or bearing will seize.
  • 3DP M5 washers included in STL may be used to free bearings that seize when touching the M5 fastener head.
  • low profile bogie has clearance to traverse in front of vertical extrusions that support horizontal gantry.

Required

A pair of bogies requires:

  • M5x25mm screw (4)
  • M5 locknut (4)
  • M5x10mm flathead screw (4)
  • M5 extrusion nut (4)
  • Flanged 5x14x5 ball bearing such as F605 (4)
